Educational Commitments
GSSG
The Growing Spine Foundation facilitates medical education and research to optimise the patient outcomes in EOS. This research mission is facilated through te Growing Spine Study Group (GSSG). This is an expert group of paediatric spine surgeons that specialise in early Onset Scoliosis. We, at the Spinal Deformity unit at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital and Birmingham Childrens’ Hospital we are an integral part of the GSSG. We submit patients into the GSSG database and actively pursue research through this organisation.

The Scoliosis Research Society is an international society and is one of the premier societies in the world. It focuses on research and education in spinal deformities. The current membership exceeds 1000 surgeons and researchers. I am an active member and serve on several steering committees. I have been elected to the Fellowship committee (2020 – 2023). I am a reviewer for the Spine Deformity Journal, a flagship journal of the organisation with a high impact factor.

AO Spine is an international community of spine surgeons that enhances the generation and exchange of knowledge in relation to spinal surgery. AO Spine facilitates consistent and practical educational events and encourages research into various facets of spinal surgery. I serve on faculty on various such educational events. I also serve as a reviewer for the Global Spine Journal, a flagship peer reviewed journal of the AO Spine.

I am leading the spinal module of the forthcoming MCh Orthopaedics course at the Aston University in Birmingham.

The Birmingham Spinal Centre comprises of 11 full time spinal surgeons, including 4 spinal tumour specialist surgeons and 5 paediatric and adult spinal deformity surgeons. We train post CCT spinal trainees in our fellowship programme.

We train higher surgical trainees from the West midlands deanery on the Trauma and Orthopaedics section. The Registrars spend 6 month stints with us as a part of the rotational training programme.

Visitations are facilitated through industry partners (K2M, Stryker and Medtronic) for surgeons to observe complex spinal operations such as scoliosis corrections.
GP, Physio etc teaching programme
We regularly conduct lectures and examination training sessions through the partner hospitals and clinics to train GP’s, Physiotherapists, Osteopaths and Chiropractors. A variety of subjects are covered at these sessions.
