Early onset scoliosis(MAGEC)

Idiopathic scoliosis can present in very young children. The MRI is normal. The scoliosis can progress with growth. The aim of treatment is to maintain growth of the thorax during the growing years. The focus is on allowing for normal lung development, rather than correcting the spinal curvature.

The treatment options are bracing or posterior growing rod systems. These include the Traditional Growing Rods (TGR), Magnetic (MAGEC) rods, SHILLA growth guidance systems, VEPTR and Vertebral body tethering. At skeletal maturity the patient has one last operation called Definitive fusion.
